One Thousand Words: Photos by Geoff Sowrey

Pictou, Nova Scotia, Canada

For a time, Pictou was the major northern port in Nova Scotia, notably for where the first Highlanders arrived from Scotland after being ushered from their home; a replica of the ship -- the Hector -- still floats in the harbour. And though the Intercolonial Railway saw fit to grow its network to Pictou, it's successor -- Canadian National -- would leave in the 1980s as Pictou had been reduced to a quaint tourist town.
